I couldn't just type a phrase into google back then, so I had to try and find other loafer lovers the old-fashioned way - a personal ad. Yes, I placed an ad in the Village Voice, New York's alternative newspaper. I don't remember the exact text but it probably went something like this:
ARE YOU INTO MEN'S LOAFERS?
GM, 22, 5'10", 135 lbs wants to meet others who like men who wear loafers...
I wasn't exactly sure where it would lead, but I was hoping to hear from someone who shared my interest and I did. I think I ended up getting two or three letters in my PO box. I didn't end up meeting any of the men who responded to my ad, but I remember exchanging a couple of letters with one guy and sending him a drawing of what was my favorite type of loafer at the time - the tassel.
After more than twenty-five years, still my favorite style of tassel loafer. |
I didn't know anything about brands or what type they were (I'm still not an expert today) but any man who was wearing a pair of these was sure to capture my attention.
I also really liked low-vamped Italian loafers. When I was sixteen, I had a summer office job and one of the managers, Bill, was a sexy, curly-haired Puerto Rican with a tight, compact body, and he wore them quite frequently. One day, I felt like I'd hit the jackpot when he came into the men's room and sat in the stall adjacent to mine. I remember being aroused as I admired his loafers and watched his sheer-socked heel slip out of his shoe.
These low vamp loafers bring back memories of my first manager, Bill. |
Now, over twenty-five years later, I'm still seeking answers to my loafer questions but, thanks to the internet, I'm able to connected with men all over the world to explore the answers.
What were the first types of loafers you were drawn to?
